HandiViz - Collision Avoidance Wheelchair

This technology aims at solving the problem of low cost collision avoidance for shared control robots.   An identified market is the one of assistive devices where this technology is embedded on a powered wheelchair to help users driving a wheelchair by providing local collision avoidance when needed. The user is always in control of the wheelchair and decides of the trajectory, however when getting close to an obstacle, the system corrects the trajectory of the wheelchair in a smooth and secure way.

HPC041  |  Smart Pillow and Smart Bed-Sheet System for Sleep Monitoring.

An unconstrained real-time method to detect the relationship between breathing patterns and sleep efficiency (%SE) during sleep was developed. This system consists of an array of force sensitive resistors (FSR) sensors embedded on a pillow sheet, wireless network devices based on low-cost ZigBee technology to digitize and transmit the pressure data to desktop computer or software to analyze and classify body movements. This product can evaluate the quality of sleep by using the frequency of body movement during the night that were classified using a newly developed classification algorithm based on thorax movement.

The researchers have developed a pain memory based on a pain scale for recording subjective pain strength. Their aim is to establish a quantifiable system in which patients having pain associated with cancers to participate in subjective pain management. This technology can be applied to medical and pharmaceutical studies to relieve pain and symptoms other than pain as well as in the development of IT devices for utilizing patient data in clinical practices. Eldercare Monitoring Systems (EMS) that can continuously keep track of daily activities of elderly who are living alone are becoming popular as a means of ensuring their safety at home. A challenge that emerges from such widespread deployments is the accumulation of large amounts of sensor data that need to be processed and analyzed, to identify elderly who may require close attention and help. Manual inspection of such voluminous data is not practical. In hospitals, some expensive equipment is shared among a few hospital wards and labs. It is sometimes difficult to track the whereabouts of this equipment manually. These equipment require regular servicing by external vendors. Service engineers always have difficulty in locating the equipment when they need to service them. This project develops a tracking system using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons and mobile phone app. The beacons are used to either identify a location or an equipment. Through mobile app installed on staffs’ mobile phone, locations of equipment are crowd-sourced in the background and updated in the cloud.
