Norway has a long and rugged coastline, and because of this Norway have been a seafaring nation for over a thousand years. Safety has always been an issue, and even today we register over five hundred accidents related to ship operations in Norway alone. Over 50% of these are injuries to personnel, and the number increase every year. The cost of absence and sick payments amount to over 1.5 billion NOK each year, or about 177 million USD. This technology presents a low-cost flexible conductive composite and a simple process of arranging the nickel particles in the desired direction by using an external magnetic field. This technology relates to a flexible conduction trace which has better electrical characteristic comparing the previous the metal thin film tech. Furthermore, the flexible conduction trace in this invention is able to maintain a constant resistance during no tensile strain is applied or the tensile strain is applied. Thus this invention provides the operational reliability and prevents the degradation that is experienced in other flexible and conductive materials.

HandiViz - Collision Avoidance Wheelchair

This technology aims at solving the problem of low cost collision avoidance for shared control robots.   An identified market is the one of assistive devices where this technology is embedded on a powered wheelchair to help users driving a wheelchair by providing local collision avoidance when needed. The user is always in control of the wheelchair and decides of the trajectory, however when getting close to an obstacle, the system corrects the trajectory of the wheelchair in a smooth and secure way.

HPC041  |  Smart Pillow and Smart Bed-Sheet System for Sleep Monitoring.

An unconstrained real-time method to detect the relationship between breathing patterns and sleep efficiency (%SE) during sleep was developed. This system consists of an array of force sensitive resistors (FSR) sensors embedded on a pillow sheet, wireless network devices based on low-cost ZigBee technology to digitize and transmit the pressure data to desktop computer or software to analyze and classify body movements. This product can evaluate the quality of sleep by using the frequency of body movement during the night that were classified using a newly developed classification algorithm based on thorax movement.

We licensed A*STAR I2R’s restroom visit monitoring system (aka smart toilet system) to develop a restroom cleanliness management solution. The system which has a people-density functionality and ammonia detection system, sends an SMS alert to cleaners when a pre-determined number of people or odour level has been reached. We partnered I2R to test-bed the smart toilet system over 60 restrooms placed at high human-traffic locations, such as hawker centers, the Singapore Zoo, Jurong Bird Park, Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa Island and commercial organization restrooms, such as Capital Tower, Wilkie Edge, West Coast Plaza and Kopitiam at NUH.

With the increasing attention to the Internet of Things (IoT), there is an increasing demand for energy harvesting technologies for supplying power to sensor nodes.  This technology allows for the generation of electricity at a high energy density of more than 3mW, which is by far greater than conventional methods, such as piezoelectric method or electrostatic method.  According to this technology, thick-film magnets are used for generating electricity.  A cantilever structure is employed for generating electricity by electromagnetic induction using inertial force vibration.  This device shows a large amplitude in resonance with the frequency of the vibration source.

In hospitals, some expensive equipment is shared among a few hospital wards and labs. It is sometimes difficult to track the whereabouts of this equipment manually. These equipment require regular servicing by external vendors. Service engineers always have difficulty in locating the equipment when they need to service them. This project develops a tracking system using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons and mobile phone app. The beacons are used to either identify a location or an equipment. Through mobile app installed on staffs’ mobile phone, locations of equipment are crowd-sourced in the background and updated in the cloud.

Waste collection has been a routine task of making trips to all the waste collection points at prescribed time and route, regardless of whether the waste collection points are empty or filled. A lot of efficiencies can be gained if waste collection points are remotely sensed. This project seeks to implement a battery operated bin waste sensing mechanism that includes a Low Power Wide Area Network system (LPWAN) for transmission of bins’ status to a central server, which in turn push job request to a mobile app. The implementation is initially targeted for a campus-based waste management system.
