Personnel Tracking with Inertial Measurement Technology (IMU)


Abstract/Technology Overview

The inertial technologies, including inertial guidance system, inertial navigation, inertial measurement and other variations, have been used in a wide range of applications including the navigation of aircraft, tactical and strategic missiles, spacecraft, submarines and ships. In all kinds of navigation systems (such as radio-based navigation, astronomical navigation, etc.), the inertial navigation system is regarded as the one with the most potential in the future. Inertial navigation is a self-contained navigation technique in which measurements provided by accelerometers and gyroscopes are used to track the position and orientation of an object relative to a known starting point, orientation and velocity. The advantage of inertial navigation is that it requires no external references in order to determine its position, orientation, or velocity once it has been initialized. Since it requires no external reference (after initialization), it is immune to jamming and deception. It is widely used in military and civilian areas.

There is no extra infrastructure or network system needed for deploying our inertial navigation system. Our system builds a 3D model for any complex indoor architecture, provides accurate position and direction with estimated navigation to people equipped with a micro locating device, and overall information of personnel location. It’s helpful to realize the need to know the exact location of the personnel in a Hazardous Working Environment.

CREATE system requires no infrastructure or network and provides real-time positions and directions, it’s a very cost-effective system.


Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages

Wireless Positioning Device

The wireless positioning device is a small battery-powered device mounted on the user to track the real-time position. The major components are the IMU module, wireless transceiver, and battery. The IMU module can monitor crucial parameters including the displacement, heading, altitude, and orientation of the positioning device, which
are then sent to the server via the wireless transceiver.

CREATE positioning system has three innovative technologies: robust pedestrian tracking, intelligent data fusion, and intelligent learning. These technologies have enabled the positioning system to provide accurate location of the mobile devices using existing indoor signals, independent of extra infrastructures.

  • Robust pedestrian tracking: CREATE positioning system works robustly against different environments, different users, different devices, and different attachments.
  • Intelligent data fusion: a flexible framework to account for different sensor settings in the different environment with zero effort; global position estimation with highly robust self-healing functionality; low computational complexity to enable self-learning and evolution.
  • Intelligent learning: CREATE positioning system can learn the characteristics of individuals like step length, features of devices such as bias, and features of environments including signal maps to optimize the positioning accuracy.
