Biodegradable Controlled Release Microparticles for Environmental Applications

Abstract/Technology Overview

Through a proprietary matrix encapsulation technique, active ingredients are incorporated into a polymer matrix. Then the matrix is machined into microparticles that contain high concentrations of the encapsulated actives. These microparticles can be incorporated into a secondary carrier matrix such as water, oil, hydrogel, polymer, or paint. In that way, they impart the special active ingredient controlled release properties to the secondary carrier matrix. Fragrances, essential oils, vitamins, surfactants, and preservatives are just a few examples of actives that can be encapsulated in this flexibly adaptable and applicable way.

Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages

  • Processing at ambient temperatures (20 - 30°C)

  • Processing at low pressures (5 - 50 psi)

  • Ability to incorporate actives in liquid, solid, and gel states, with payloads of up to 80%

  • Controlled release duration ranges from several hours to a few months

  • Encapsulating matrix is entirely biodegradable

  • Particle size can be customized (5 - 50 μm)

  • Production process is simple and easy to scale up for mass production

Potential Applications

  • Home care - e.g. controlled dosing of surfactants and odorous materials

  • Coatings and inks - e.g. controlled dosing of biocides

  • Flexible packaging - e.g. controlled dosing of preservatives and pesticides

  • Agriculture - e.g. controlled dosing of pesticides and fertilizers

  • Pest control - e.g. controlled dosing of preservatives for bait products and pesticides

Customer Benefit

  • Enables a secondary carrier matrix to acquire controlled release properties

  • Improves treatment efficacy

  • Reduces consumption of actives

  • Actives are safer and easier to handle

  • Protects actives from environmental degradation (e.g. UV)
