Non-invasive Blood Glucose Monitoring


Abstract/Technology Overview

The prevalence of diabetes is high, projected to affect 629 million people worldwide by 2045. This is a condition where health anomaly results in an unusually high level of glucose in the blood.

Tracking blood glucose level often involves collecting a blood sample, typically by pricking the fingers, transferring them onto a test strip then analyzed by a blood glucose meter. Some diabetics patients have to take multiple readings a day, before meals and 90 minutes after meals. Such invasive blood glucose reading is uncomfortable and the test strips are costly in the long run.

This technology provides a non-invasive way to derive the Blood Glucose Level of a person. It uses Photoplethysmography (PPG) technology to extract the heartbeat data and processed by a proprietary algorithm that generates a prediction model that derives the blood glucose level of the person.

With a non-invasive blood glucose detection technology, a pre-diabetic condition could be detected early. Early medical treatment could potentially prevent or delay the onset diabetics condition.


Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages

Recent science has shown good correlations between heartbeat pattern and blood glucose level. This technology is an algorithm that analyzes the heartbeats of a person and provides blood glucose measurement as 3 levels --- High, Normal and Low --- with an accuracy of 83.3%, 75% & 75% respectively.

The proprietary algorithm, with predictive measurement of blood glucose levels, works with most commercial photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors that provide reasonably good quality signals. 

This can meaningfully complement a holistic health monitoring system for the community, to be paired with regular doctor visitations. This technology has been tested successfully in human trails with supervision by medical professionals. Population pool has been carefully selected to include a wide representation of multiple races, both diabetics, and non-diabetics person.

The solution can detect and monitor the blood glucose level of an individual and provides an alert should high blood glucose level be detected. This provides early detection of pre-diabetics conditions and enables early detection and subsequent early treatment.

A potential method to pre-screen diabetes in a large population for preventive health measures. This acts as a part of the digital health kit for monitoring the wellbeing of the elderly.
