Our design is a commercially available height-adjustable table which has been customized and adapted to have a standard commercially available slit lamp mounted on it instead of on the standard table marketed by the manufacturers of the slit lamp. Our table has leg support at each end instead of at the centre, thus allowing for wheelchairs to be pushed close enough for the patients to comfortably rest their chins on the chin-rest. This solves the problem of having to transfer patients from wheelchairs to the examination chair, thus ensuring safety, comfort & also saving time.
Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages
We are using a commercially available height-adjustable table but have customized the table top with cut-outs to accommodate the wheelchair handles to enable the wheelchair to be pushed right up close to the table so that the patient is able to comfortably rest their chins on the chin-rest mounted on the table without having to lean forward too much. A standard commercially available slit lamp is mounted on the table.
Our modified slit lamp table design enables for immobile wheelchair-bound patients to be examined at the slit lamp without having to be transferred out from their wheelchairs. At present, such patients are required to be transferred to another chair to be comfortably examined at the slit lamp and this requires the patient to either stand up to move to the other chair, or sometimes the patient even has to be physically carried over. This transfer carries a significant risk of a fall as well as potential injury.
Immobile patients who are wheelchair-bound can now be examined at the slit lamp without having to transfer to an examination chair as is usually required for examination at conventional slit lamps.
