Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in Singapore and the World. The diagnosis requires visual field (VF) testing to detect VF defects. This project focuses on developing a novel visual field application (app) on portable devices to screen patients for glaucoma and to classify the severity of disease.
The app uses a novel stimulus which simultaneously tests multiple locations in each eye for visual field defects. When the screen flashes, patients with VF defects will observe the abnormal area. With a stylus pen, patients will demarcate the size and location of VF defects.
Doctors can use the app on a portable device e.g iPad in consultation rooms and perform VF testing on patients. Patients without VF defects are excluded efficiently reducing unnecessary conventional VF testing. Patients with VF defects will be diagnosed earlier and treatment for glaucoma can be initiated.
Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages
The technology comprises a novel visual field testing software. Although designed to detect visual field defects from glaucoma, it may be used for other eye diseases causing visual field defects. This App was designed to run on the iPad iOS platform for easy adoption and distribution. It caters for all the different models of the iPad with their different sizes. It does not require any other accessories to work.
The visual field App is intended to be used in the healthcare industry as a means to detect visual field defects from glaucoma and other eye diseases. It may be usable in a telemedicine model of healthcare delivery. It may be usable by the layman as a Health related App, and it is designed to run on the iPad iOS platform for easy adoption. .
The key significance of a new method of vision loss testing is that it makes testing portable, lowers cost and is marketable by smartphone application stores. The new method will also detect other eye diseases that cause VF defects. The socioeconomic burden of glaucoma vision loss will be reduced by timely detection. In contrast, the current “state of the art” is the visual field machine which is bulky, expensive and distribution is difficulty and highly regulated.
