The world population is growing; new megacities are emerging. And while the urbanizing of adjacent agricultural land continues, topics like food security, food safety and food quality are becoming more and more important. Therefore, the need to develop new ways of producing food increases.

Urban farming is a high potential solution, especially in densely built areas like Singapore. Supplying the local food market, urban farms can make Singapore less dependent of import and create a promising new business market, that investors, urban farmers and retailers will benefit from.

This technology consortium is a group of experts in the field of food, logistics and urban planning, that aims to set up urban farms in megacities, from horizontal greenhouses to vertical farming and roof-top farms. The consortium uses an integral and circular approach in order to make urban farms healthier, more sustainable and more profitable. To achieve these technical ambitions, the partnership collaborates with cutting-edge technology companies. These parties strengthen the consortium with their know-how and expertise in supplying fresh water and advanced climate control, irrigation, and fertigation and hydroponic growing systems.


Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages

Urban Farming Partners, a group of experts in the fields of horticulture (Rijk Zwaan, Priva, DryHydroponics and VDH Poly greenhouses), water and energy (Allied Waters), logistics (Greenport Company), SMART cities (KuiperCompagnons), business development, legal structures and training and education (Kneppelhout & Korthals and Kenlog), are working together with the Dutch Government. This combined knowledge, expertise and skills ensures our added value to develop integrated food chains through our Urban Farming product.

The urban farm is an integrated and circular concept that creates an optimal indoor growing environment with state-of-the-art LED-lighting, irrigation, fertigation and climate control systems. Moreover, solutions from the circular economy concepts are applied, such as the use of solar energy, rain water and by-products of nearby companies, like CO2 and residual cooling.

  The proven Dutch technologies that will be used in the urban farm are:

  • DryHydroponics © is a cultivation system suitable for short-cycle crops, like lettuce, herbs and flowers. In cultivation ponds filled with nutrient rich water, the crops grow in cropholders placed on floats. This patented design allows crops to acquire sufficient amounts of water, light, nutrients, CO2 and oxygen at all times.

  • Priva supplies a range of systems and devices for monitoring and controlling the indoor growing environment: from traditional measuring boxes to highly sensitive sensors, and from air treatment to advanced controls. All of these assist in creating the ideal internal climate. Control of the internal climate provides influence over both the growth of the crops and the prevention of diseases and crop damage.


Potential Applications

Urban farming is a high potential solution, especially in densely built areas like Singapore. Millions of square meters in, on top of and underneath buildings can serve as the fertile ground for so called urban farms.

Urban Farming Partners has developed three different urban farm models, respectively the high-tech greenhouse, the one crop box and the 101 tower. The models are suitable for different areas in Singapore and together forming a total food concept for a more resilient city.

The high-tech greenhouse, single-layer indoor production in a greenhouse using sunlight and equipped with cutting edge technologies to create optimal growing circumstances, is greenfield development in the periphery of the city.

The one crop box, multi-layer indoor production in a fully closed environment based on led lightning and DryHydroponic system, is greenfield development or redevelopment of industrial areas.

The 101 tower, the flagship of Urban Farming in the Worlds, is multi-layer indoor production in a fully closed environment combined with offices, apartments and leisure activities. In this way, this true icon provides added value for Singaporean residents. The 101 tower has a small footprint through which it is suitable for downtown Singapore.
