Abstract/Technology Overview

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram negative motile bacillus and an environmental saprophyte that causes melioidosis. While the disease is commonly reported in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia, an alarming rate of clinical cases are being reported in other regions like America, Africa and India. The developed iiPCR assay include unique primers and probe which target specific genes of Burkholderia pseudomallei that presents at the pole of the bacterial cell. Our assay is able to distinguish Burkholderia pseudomallei from other neighbouring species like Burkholderia thailandensis and Burkholderia cepacia.

 


Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram negative motile bacillus and an environmental saprophyte that causes melioidosis. While the disease is commonly reported in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia, an alarming rate of clinical cases are being reported in other regions like America, Africa and India. Current diagnosis tools of melioidosis include culture, biochemical profile, serology test and molecular identification through Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). In our study, we have developed an insulated isothermal PCR (iiPCR) assay in identifying Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is accurate, cost effective and user friendly. The iiPCR system is able to diagnose for Burkholderia pseudomallei within an hour.


Potential Applications

This end-point detection platform is user friendly. Advantages of this device include the quick diagnosis of melioidosis, its effectiveness in terms of cost and time and savings in manpower. In addition, field scientists are able to make quick countermeasures or preventive decisions based on the results obtained at the site where the samples are taken (i.e. contaminated soil and water).
