SUSTAINABLE FOOD & NUTRITION

Our food system is susceptible to major disruptions like the onset of COVID-19 virus and rising global temperatures. However, sustainable and resilient food processes and innovations, such as agri-farming and enhancements to supply chain logistics, can meet our nutritional needs yet remain eco-friendly.

KEYNOTE SESSION I: WHAT WILL BE THE FUTURE OF FOOD

Under the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the nation has set its goal to produce 30 per cent of the country's nutritional needs locally by 2030 to build a more resilient food future. Pivoting the use of biotech for conventional applications to the development of alternative protein is an innovative and ground-breaking way to increase sustainable food production. In 2020, Singapore was the first in the world to approve the sales of lab-grown meat. Is alternative protein our go-to in increasing protein needs? Will it generate controversies the way genetically modified food has?

KEYNOTE SESSION II: DIGGING DEEP TO MEET OUR FUTURE FOOD NEEDS

By 2050, the world would have to produce 60 per cent more food to feed a world population of close to 10 billion. Current farming practices would not be able to meet the human consumption patterns today. While new technology and food alternatives could more effectively address food security and supply chain challenges, we have to also uncover and address systemic issues and adverse behaviours within the food industry.

THEMATIC SESSION II: IPHATCH 2021

IPHatch is a programme that uniquely matches technologies from multinational corporations with start-ups to give them a boost to accelerate their businesses. This year, the focus will be on sustainable food production and agritech. Traditional farmers or start-ups are starting to incorporate new technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and analytics to optimise food production or improve the efficiency of the value chain. To close the gap in availability and accessibility of enabling technologies, one of the ways is to tap into the R&D investments from the corporates to bring about such social and economic impact in this sector through the IPHatch programme. We welcome businesses and entrepreneurs to join us.

Food waste is one of the largest waste streams in Singapore and it has grown by around 20% over the last decade, with 744 million kilograms of food waste generated in 2019 alone. While waste generation is part and parcel of human civilisation, modern-day technologies have allowed us to transform thrash to treasure. Functional food products and innovative packaging materials have been developed with enhanced processing methods that efficiently upcycle these side streams.
