A Blockchain-Enabled Infrastructure with Offline Capability
Internet is an important enabler in achieving the UN sustainable development goals, yet the underserved communities located in rural areas could not justify the expensive infrastructure and deployment cost; hence 3.7 billion people or about half the world’s population is still unconnected. On the other hand, in developed economies where people are enjoying the benefits of digitalization (e-payment, ecommerce etc), access to such services is still relying on internet, an infrastructure that is subjected to single or concentrated point of failure. As seen in the recent flooding disaster in ZhengZhou, where the modern social and economic systems of the provincial capital come to a standstill with the collapse of such critical infrastructure.
We address this fundamental issue by HyperMesh – the cost-effective, distributed, vertically and horizontally integrated infrastructure comprised of edge-computing nodes (high-end WiFi routers) and blockchain technology powered by sustainable energy. The solution is self-contained and sustainable, allowing it to provide core services like local communication and payment services with or without internet connectivity.
Equipped with both broadband and narrowband radio technology, HyperMesh offers both broadband networks and Low-Power WAN (LPWAN) networks that work with various Internet backhaul interfaces, supports all kind of deployment applications (high and low data-rate, limited or large geographical area of coverage etc.), and is positioned to be the Internet of Everything.
Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages
Most decentralized solutions start at the blockchain layer and build up. In contrast, to address the fundamental issue with connectivity, HyperMesh is built upon a communication hardware layer, secured by blockchain technology, and powered by renewable transactive energy.
The hardware layer, powered by MeshBox indoor and outdoor WiFi routers, creates the mesh networks that can operate without connectivity to Internet, or as the last-mile connectivity with existing Internet backhauls like fiber, cellular and satellites. Its patented low-loss routing algorithm achieves 15-17% loss/hop (vs over 40% in conventional mesh).
Layered on top of the hardware layer is Spectrum, a lightweight and efficient blockchain that is deployable on low-end CPU and diskspace. Its Proof of Capability consensus is 100x more energy efficient compared to Proof of Work. Spectrum is equipped with cross-chain capability, creating an open platform for its ecosystem to unleash asset value seamlessly across chains. Layered on Spectrum is Photon, a highly scalable Layer 2 architecture that brings low-latency and allows instantaneous P2P, P2M and M2M transactions. We have built on top of the existing layer 2 architecture for transactions to be signed and finalized without the need to validate on-chain, thereby allowing transactions with or without internet connectivity.
HyperMesh with its hardware equipped with LoRaWAN, as well as the lightweight blockchain coupled with Photon layer, is well-positioned to be deployed at the edge, offering computing power and storage for IoT solution. Specifically, it can operate in intermittent network situations, offers QoS support and Token-Switching – ability to simultaneous conveyance of crypto-tokens and crypto-graphically secured data.

Central banks that are exploring issuance of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) have concerns over security and resilient of the delivery channel especially at the consumer level. With Photon offline payment and Atmosphere cross-chain capability, our infrastructure can be the conduit between central banks, retail banks and mainstream users wherein transactions using CBDC can be conducted anywhere, anytime, under any internet conditions, all in a secured manner.
HyperMesh can also be deployed on maritime vessels where internet can be scared and expensive while cruising to provide local communication, e-payment, CDN services etc. IoT solutions can lever HyperMesh on-vessel network for data ingress and analysis. Port clearance procedure can begin well ahead of arrival, with HyperMesh providing connectivity via LEO.
Photon payment network provides the foundation for IoT Machine-to-Machine (M2M) transaction and supports distributed high-concurrency payments in the Internet of Everything, where trillions of devices will use broadband, narrowband or integrated Space-Ground-Integrated networks to communicate and make transactive-IoT payments.
